Three researchers with the KU Center on Developmental Disabilities were part of a 2015 effort by the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD) to identify future goals in research, practice and policy for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Karrie Shogren, Susan Palmer and Michael Wehmeyer participated in the National Goals in Research, Practice and Policy project, which was designed to summarize the current state of knowledge and identify a platform of national goals, organized into 10 focus areas, for the next 10 years.
Shogren, co-director of KUCDD, associate director of the Beach Center on Disability, and associate professor of special education, co-authored the issue brief on self-determination and advocacy. She is featured in a YouTube video describing that area of focus.
Palmer, research professor with KUCDD and the Beach Center and president of AAIDD, co-authored the issue brief on education.
Wehmeyer’s research was cited in the Shogren and Palmer issue briefs.
The keynote address, issue briefs and video discussions are available online. A book will be released later this year summarizing the project’s recommendations.
